Statistical Ecology provided very lucid discussions of the concept and applications of several uni- and multivariate methods.

I especially liked the chapter on non-linear ordinations and their use. The presentation on detrended correspondence analysis is excellent (and the method that I ended up utilizing to summarize and interpret my data)/5(2).

I would be using the book to teach myself more about the application of statistics in ecology than anything else so even an introductory book with good/interesting examples would be much appreciated. Also, my research tends to be geared towards Bayesian statistics so.

Covering a wide range of disciplines, this book explains the formulae, techniques, and methods used in field ecology.

By providing an awareness of the statistical foundation for existing methods, the book will make biologists more aware of the strengths and possible weaknesses of procedures employed, and statisticians more appreciative of the needs of the field ecologist.3/5(1). Statistical Ecology was easy to interpret.

Examples made this book excellent. The book comes with a disk containing BASIC programs. This is of little help for individuals having win 95/ The BASIC interpreter, mentioned in the primer, was terminated when Windows 95 replaced MSDOS as the OS for PCs.

So if you have win95/98 you are BASICally hosed/5(2). The book presents further details of a new paradigm intended for statistical studies of stand-level vegetation energetics. The approach is holistic and the techniques are quantum ecological.

The case study’s objective is stand-level vegetation mapping by energy criteria. Since the vegetation process is conceived as an energy structural phenomenon, the obvious choice for mapping is an energy. Covering a wide range of disciplines, this book explains the formulae, techniques, and methods used in field ecology.

By providing an awareness of the statistical foundation for existing methods, the book will make biologists more aware of the strengths and possible weaknesses of procedures employed, and statisticians more appreciative of the needs of the field ecologist.

The award winner will receive a prize of $, a copy of a book by Pielou (winner’s choice), and recognition on the ESA Stats Ecology website. The previous year’s winner will be announced at the annual Statistical Ecology Section social at the ESA annual meeting.

These values are more useful than p (significance) values, or than regression slopes from transformed data, because they express statistical information in ecological terms. WHAT THIS BOOK IS NOT ABOUT What you should already know. Methods in Statistical Ecology.

Book Series There are 2 volumes in this series. Published - About this series. This new series in statistical ecology is designed to cover diverse topics in emerging interdisciplinary research.

The emphasis is on specific statistical methodologies utilized in burgeoning areas of quantitative ecology.

Statistical Ecology / HMSC Hierarchical Modelling of Species Communities (HMSC) is a model-based approach for analyzing community ecological data (Ovaskainen et a. Ecological Models and Data in R is the first truly practical introduction to modern statistical methods for ecology.

In step-by-step detail, the book teaches ecology graduate students and researchers everything they need to know in order to use maximum likelihood, information-theoretic, and Bayesian techniques to analyze their own data using the programming language R. Drawing on extensive.

A synthesis of contemporary analytical and modeling approaches in population ecology The book provides an overview of the key analytical approaches that are currently used in demographic, genetic, and spatial analyses in population ecology.

The chapters present current problems, introduce advances in analytical methods and models, and demonstrate the applications of quantitative methods to.

include the statistical properties of ratios and other nonlinear combina-tions of random variables, rules of expectation, the principle of maximum likelihood estimation, and the Taylor series approximation.

This book is an attempt to address problems such as those above adopt-ing the special perspective of behavioral ecology. Throughout the book. An Introduction to Statistical Analysis in Research: With Applications in the Biological and Life Sciences is an ideal textbook for upper-undergraduate and graduate-level courses in research methods, biostatistics, statistics, biology, kinesiology, sports science and medicine, health and physical education, medicine, and nutrition.

The book is. Introduction. The two instances of modern in the title of this book reflect the two major recent revolutions in biological data analyses.

Biology, formerly a science with sparse, often only qualitative data has turned into a field whose production of quantitative data is on par with high energy physics or astronomy, and whose data are wildly more heterogeneous and complex.Statistical ecology and environmental statistics are in a take-off stage both for reasons of societal challenge and statistical opportunity.

It is becoming clear that statistical ecology and environmental statistics are calling for more and more of non-traditional statistical approaches.

This is partly because ecological and environmental studiesFile Size: KB. The relationship between ecology and statistics, although new relative to ecology itself, is a committedthey often appear joined at the hip.

Ecological Statistics and The New Statistics with R both illustrate the depth of the union between the disciplines—the good and the bad. These two books, although very different in focus, message, and design, share the fundamental goal of Cited by: 1.
